Mental Health Services

Answering the particular needs of homeless adults with persistent mental illness, Homeward Bound operates a Mental Health Services Program that provides both short- and long-term assisted housing and support.

Voyager Carmel Center

Originally established by the county in the former Carmel Hotel in San Rafael, Voyager Carmel Center became part of Homeward Bound in 1987. Adults with persistent mental illness participate in programs focused on enhancing individual strengths through symptom management, crisis prevention, basic living skills improvement, a supportive community and advancement toward job readiness and retention.

Voyager Carmel Center offers 36 beds in individual rooms, with 10 of these beds reserved for residents staying one to four months. The remaining 26 beds provide long-term housing for people who otherwise would face homelessness. The center includes a 24-hour staff, communal kitchen and regular community activities such as group outings, Sunday brunch and holiday events. All formerly homeless residents in this program are referred to Homeward Bound by Marin County Community Mental Health Services.

Palm Court

Palm Court provides long-term housing for single adults with persistent mental illness. It offers a "next step" to independent living for those residents of Voyager Carmel Center who are capable of thriving with less supervision and more integration into the broader community.

Residents in our Palm Court program, which offers long-term housing for 20 adults, have regular access to a resource counselor and support services that include job training and referrals to other needed services.
